Toledo, Spain

Located just 45 miles southwest of Madrid, Toledo (population 60,000) is an important Spanish city from a historical, religious, and architectural standpoint. Toledo was the first capital of Spain and prevailed as its capital until the 16th Century. One of Europe’s most noteworthy sites for medieval history, Toledo is also acclaimed for its intellectual reputation stemming from this historical period, when the city was Europe’s center for the study of languages and natural sciences. Since then it has remained largely unchanged in its blending of Arabic, Jewish, and Christian influences. Toledo’s rich architectural past is evident in the buildings that still stand from various periods of Spanish architecture, such as Moorish/Mudejar, Gothic and Renaissance. With remains of the fortifying city walls still intact and ancient meandering footpaths carved through the city streets, Toledo has been relatively unaltered since the end of the Middle Ages. Over 100 monuments comprise Toledo’s historic center, making it one of the largest in Spain. Toledo is also famous for its outstanding cathedral, which houses many of El Greco’s paintings, along with a variety of other art treasures.
