Jaén, SpainJaén (population 113,000), set at the foot of Mt. Santa Catalina, is a rather tranquil city in the otherwise lively Andalusian province of Jaén. A history of intertwined Moorish, Jewish and Christian influence is to thank for the citys architectural diversity and significant monuments, such as its Renaissance Cathedral, hilltop Moorish castle, several churches and palaces, Arab baths (approx. 11th Century), and the Museum of Jaén Province. Jaén also offers a wide variety of outdoor sporting activities and year-round cultural events such as theatre, cinema, and concerts, just to name a few. Jaéns impressive array of monuments is equally matched by its exclusive landscapes. Containing the largest region of government-protected natural areas in Spain, Jaén Province is home to various endangered species that reside in the regions vast parks. A climb up to the Moorish castle atop Mt. Santa Catalina reveals an amazing panoramic view of the city and another important aspect of its natural landscape: its sprawling olive groves, which make it the largest producer of olive oil in the world.
