Cáceres, Spain

The hilltop city of Cáceres (population approximately 85,000), is the capital of the Upper Extremadura region of Spain. It has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage City, and rightly so given its abundant history and its constant evolution from Roman times until the present day. The city’s architecture has been influenced by a long history of battles between Moors and Christians, as evidenced by the blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic, and Italian Renaissance styles. About 30 towers still remaining from the Islamic period, mixed with Arab and Gothic influence, Italian Renaissance aspects, and art from America, form an interesting melange that makes this city of Extremadura so unique.
