Pamplona, Spain

Capital of the region of Navarra since the 9th Century, Pamplona is a quiet and pleasant town (population 171,000), found at the foot of the Pyrenees near the French border. Rich in history, the once fortressed Pamplona which defended against advances from the north is now like many European cites in its make-up, strewn with enchanting churches, a cathedral, parks and gardens, museums and an impressive citadel. The area is part of the pilgrimage route, Camino de Santiago, and is also widely known for its Fiestas de San Fermin or the “running of the bulls”, a week-long, non-stop celebration in July. Flocked to by famous painters and writers such as Picasso, Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway, as well as by locals and tourists, this spectacle is hugely associated with the culture of Spain. Other attractions include people-watching in the plazas, shopping for souvenirs, the Museo de Navarra, night-time entertainment by local bands, and local tapas and culinary delights such as lamb chops, asparagus, sautéed artichokes, Piquillo peppers, delicious red wine, and Roncal and Aezcoa-Valcarlos cheeses.
